Drawing on many years of experience in materials science and materials engineering, we are confident that you will be impressed by our expertise

MECS in a nutshell

The Material Engineering Center Saarland (MECS) is a leading research and transfer centre for materials science and materials engineering, founded in 2009 by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Mücklich at Saarland University. As a Steinbeis Research Center, MECS supports companies from industry and research with innovative solutions for materials analysis, materials development, and digitalization using artificial intelligence.

Our core competencies lie in the field of technological knowledge transfer, realised through feasibility studies, cooperation projects, and long-term strategic partnerships with regional, national, and international companies.

Draw upon our extensive experience in materials science and engineering, and experience first-hand our expertise.

Material Analysis and microstructure characterization

High-precision service measurements and characterisation of structures of a wide variety of material classes.

Material Development and damage analysis

Scientifically based consulting for the optimization of materials and processes.

Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence

Implementation of machine learning for materials research and quatility control.

Individual training courses, consulting and experts assessments

Tailored courses and reports on metallography, damage analysis, circular economy and implementation of artificial intelligence

Feasibility studies

At our company, we assess the technical viability of novel material concepts and provide comprehensive support throughout the development process, from the conceptualisation stage up to a pilot plant phase. With our specialisms in digitalisation and artificial intelligence, we develop customised solutions for microstructure analysis, process optimisation and quality assurance to ensure efficient and future-oriented production.

Contract measurements

Our company is pleased to offer comprehensive material and damage analyses, as well as manufacturing process optimisation using state-of-the-art cross-scale characterisation methods. Our experts are able to evaluate microstructures, material properties, and process conditions, identify the causes of damage, and provide well-founded recommendations for improving quality and efficiency.

Consulting

We provide practical advice and strategy development for all material technology and materials science issues, both internally and in collaboration with our clients. We also offer customised training courses in metallography, microstructure characterisation, damage analysis, circular economy and AI-supported materials analysis to impart knowledge in a targeted and application-oriented manner.

Strategic partnerships

We collaborate with you as a strategic partner in the areas of innovative material concepts, sustainable manufacturing processes, and digitalisation. We are transparent and reliable partners, committed to long-term partnerships. We work in partnership with our clients to develop forward-looking solutions, optimise material and production strategies, and create sustainable competitive advantages. This is achieved through the application of scientific expertise and practical implementation.

Correlative Microscopy

A correlative characterisation of microstructures serves as a benchmark for automated microstructure recognition and as a starting point for machine learning approaches.

Triboelectrical Characterisation

In addition to our microstructure analysis, we are able to perform a wide variety of triboelectric measurements under controlled conditions.

Failure analysis

In the field of Failure analysis analysis, in addition to identifying and analysing fracture surfaces, we are also able to fully characterise components on both a macro and micro scale.

Surface analysis

We offer surface analysis based on physical and chemical methods for the targeted adjustment of specific properties.

Materials analysis and microscopy

We offer comprehensive characterisation of your materials using state-of-the-art methods – from chemical analyses, microstructural investigations and texture analyses to high-resolution 3D tomography in the nanometer range.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning

Our services range from feasibility studies using our established approaches to image-based analysis of microscopic images to exploratory data analysis with unsupervised ML.
